Step 1: Remove makeup + SPF.

As with any evening skin care routine, you must remove your makeup and SPF before going in for a deeper cleanse.

“All skin types can benefit from oil cleansing, as oil cleansers work by gently lifting off dirt, debris, and makeup, without harming the skin,” organic esthetician Katie Sobelman once told mbg.

Step 3: Toner or essence.

Let’s be clear—toners aren’t a necessity when it comes to basic skin care.

Witch hazel and other astringents can help reduce excessive oil production. However, if you’re already using other oil-controlling products in your routine, you can use a hydrating toner or essence to replenish moisture.

The magic takes place here. Retinol and exfoliants shouldn’t be taken at the same time in the evening, but when used in a cyclical routine (yep, we’re talking about skin cycling), they can both be helpful for people with oily skin.

When you opt to exfoliate in the nights, pick your acids wisely. Salicylic and glycolic acids are excellent exfoliants for oily skin, according to Fenton. Salicylic acid in particular may be a better choice for persons with oily, acne-prone skin. According to dermatologist Ramya Garlapati, M.D., this beta-hydroxy acid can go deeply into pores and unclog them because it is oil-soluble.
