Almost everyone in the Philippines will suffer from oily skin and acne at some point due to our hot and humid climate. For a select number, though, these skin issues aren’t solely geographical or seasonal. Many of us are just born with an oily, acne-prone skin type (thank you, genetics), which can be difficult to manage on its own—especially if you live in the tropics. But, before you consider relocating to a colder area, consider this: give your skincare routine a makeover as soon as possible. Skin Care Routine For Acne Prone Skin Philippines.

Dr. Maika Slatensek, dermatologist and medical director of Slate Medical Group, explains all you need to know about caring for this prevalent skin type. Read on for days when your skin is brighter and less oily!

1. Use a cleaner with a pH balance.

Even if your skin is oily and acne-prone, it’s crucial to avoid drying it out after cleansing. “To gently remove residue, debris, and excess oil without drying your skin, use a water-based facial wash that is pH-balanced (about 5.5) and SLS-free (sodium lauryl sulfate),” Dr. Maika advises.

2. Exfoliate your skin at least twice a week.

Exfoliating at least twice a week, according to the dermatologist, will remove the dead skin cells that obstruct the free passage of sebum on your skin. This will aid in the prevention of acne and, in the long run, the reduction of oiliness. Dr. Maika recommends using moderate, non-abrasive exfoliants containing beta-hydroxy acids (BHA) to not only remove dead skin but also to force out existing clogs and reduce inflammation.

3. Apply moisturizer.

Do you find that moisturizers are too heavy for your skin? It’s possible that you’re using the incorrect type. Oil-free and non-comedogenic products are preferable for this skin type, according to Dr. Maika, because they’re less prone to produce breakouts and feel heavy.

4. Use sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun.

Overexposure to UV radiation poses a greater risk than just sunburn and aging. It actually speeds up the deterioration of our skin’s functions, and if you have acne scars, it might darken them even more. As a result, it’s critical that we use sunscreen with at least SPF 50 and broad-spectrum protection every day!

What are the most important skincare products for oily, acne-prone skin?
Do you need assistance creating the ideal skin-care routine for your skin type? Dr. Maika Slatensek breaks down all of the must-have goods in your routine below!

1. Micellar water, for starters.

Micellar water removes the first layer of makeup and grime from your skin, making it easier for your face cleanser to do its job. It achieves it by employing micelles, which are microscopic oil molecules that adhere to dirt on your face and remove it without drying you out.

2. Cleansing oil

An oil cleanser would be a better option for your double cleansing routine if you wear a lot of makeup. Dr. Maika explains, “It removes the deeper layer of filth and pollutants seated in the skin.” You won’t get any breakouts from the oil because you’ll be washing it off with another cleanser anyhow!

3. Make-up remover

“Do not use body soap as a facial soap,” the doctor advises. For your second cleansing, use a moderate, SLS-free cleanser, as she suggested. “A good cleanser leaves your face smooth but not too dry,” she continues, “so it doesn’t deplete the skin’s natural oils.”

4. A moisturizing agent

To keep your face glowing and plump, opt for a light, moisturizing formula rather than heaping on more oil to your already oily skin. “Oily skin types should use water-based cosmetics. They’re made using a gel basis that doesn’t leave a greasy residue on the skin and feels light on the skin “Dr. Maika makes a point.

5. Serum

Although serums are optional, the doctor recommends using them under moisturizer for added radiance. For example, if you want to lighten any dark spots left behind from acne, brightening serums are a great addition.

6. Treatment on the spot

You can’t go wrong with spot treatments including benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, or retinoids to cure breakouts. Dr. Maika cautions, however, that you should only take these products under the supervision of your dermatologist.

7. Use a sunscreen

Finally, but certainly not least, sunscreen. In addition to having the correct level of SPF, the dermatologist recommends using a sunscreen that is water-based or has a gel texture for oily and acne-prone skin to avoid clogging pores.
